Research Project: Topic Submission Form

What is your Research Project research question?

Does the music and sound effects of a film determine the genre in which it is in and how does it help the audience relate to the film and how they react to it?

What is your Research Project research topic?

My research topic is to determine whether the choice of sound effects and soundtrack within a film are seen as one of the main characteristics that define the film into its genre.
An example of this is if you show an audience a film with no sound (no dialogue) and only a musical soundtrack like the old silent films from the start of the 1900’s - by doing this the film could come across to the audience as one genre (e.g. romance) but if you show it to the same audience again with the dialogue and sound effects implant in the film it could be a completely different genre.
The manner in which I will carry this out is by shooting a scene and applying the above theories to it. I will then have a screening of the two scenes and by the use of questionnaires to get feedback from the audience on what genres the scene fell under.
I will also be looking into the codes and conventions of film sound by researching the development of sound in film and how certain sounds and music scores have become synonymous within certain genres of film. One of the ways in which I will look into this is by selecting a number of scores from different film genres such as Horror, Comedy, Adventure, Romance and Thriller. I will also be looking to playing a score that can be seen as anonymous to a particular genre. Then seeing with I play them to a test group in no particular order and again with the use of a questionnaire get them to write down the genre in which the scores fall under and also hopefully finding out if there are scores that are not genre specific.
By doing this I hope to have discovered a way in which sound can be used to tell different stories over the same visuals on screen.
